Auricular Acupuncture or Piercings?

Acupuncture that focuses exclusively on your ears....mmm and ear piercings...

You’ve probably heard of traditional acupuncture, which uses small needles to stimulate points throughout your body.

But there’s another type of acupuncture that focuses exclusively on your ears, called Auricular Acupuncture which can in a nut shell be described as a diagnostic and treatment system based on normalizing the body's dysfunction through stimulation of points on the ear to address a range of emotional and physical health problems.

Your ear is a microsystem of your body with every part of your body having a corresponding point on your ear. By stimulating your ear points you send a therapeutic message to the corresponding part of your body and mind to treat a range of medical issues from physical pain to digestive, hormonal and emotional problems.

Before I continue you should know there are more than 200 acupuncture points in the ear. There is a standardized list of 39 auricular points. Of these 39 standard points, 10 master points are often used in auricular acupuncture treatments.

Your ears are an amazing map of your body corresponding with an inverted foetus. The lobe of the ear being the head and face, with the spine along the ear antihelix, and the feet at the top of the ear. In Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) your health depends on the flow of energy (qi) in your body. The energy travels along pathways called meridians that are named for the internal organs they connect to.

A blocked or disrupted flow of energy can have a negative effect on your physical and mental health. Acupuncture aims to restore the flow of energy by resolving any blockages or disruption.

Some of the benefits

Many people get piercings as a form of sense of freedom or self-expression but did you know it is also a form of auriculotherapy? So before you get your piercings done its helps to know that it may have a good or bad effect on your body. I am all for it I mean I have 17 piercings in my ears, as a lover of piercings and a believer of Aurticular Therapy a few things to consider before you start "bezalling" your ears.

Conch: Helps with Relaxation and Chronic Pain

The piercing associated with the inside corner of your ear helps relieve any chronic pain, such as the spinal and lower back. It is one of the more intense ear piercings to get, but many people get it done nowadays for its benefits. Some have even reported it helps aid indigestion. That corner of the ear, when pierced correctly, is connected to areas of the body such as the sacral spine, lumbar vertebrae, and thoracic vertebrae.

Rook: Digestion and Menstrual

This ear piercing is targeted more towards the female population is rumoured to alleviate pain and cramps related to the menstrual cycle. The rook is located just above where you get the conch piercing. It is the bit of cartilage that overhangs and connects the ear to the head. When pierced, the lower area connects to the body’s neighbourhoods, such as the bladder, intestines, the kidney, and even the sciatic nerve. The above site is related to parts of the body, such as the uterus, cavum pelvis, and even addresses functions associated with constipation.

Tragus: Appetite Control

This ear piercing can be tricky when healing due and take a while to heal completely, but the benefits to follow are worth the wait. Alongside myths of the piercing helping certain emotional traits such as energy levels and aggression, it can also help appetite control. The tragus is the little flap connected to your head and covers the opening to your ear. That area connects to parts of the body such as adrenal glands, pharynx, and neurological functions such as thirst, hunger, and neuroreceptors that react and demand nicotine. If you are looking to control your eating or smoking habits, this ear piercing is for you.

Helix: Insomnia

The helix ear piercing has two positions with benefits. The helix is the top corner of your ear and is a relatively common piercing for people. Little does everyone know; it can help relieve insomnia and allergy symptoms. That area is associated with linked to the brain that triggers insomnia and stress levels. When anyone suffering from sleeping problems due to depression, stress, and other hardships that sense up, the body can find relief when merely turning the ring in their ear. There have even been whispers that the helix ear piercing can aid in the comfort of allergy symptoms as well.

Daith: Migraine Relief

This piercing is famous for its relief in migraines. The Daith piercing is the very inside of your ear. It just above the tragus and near the opening to your ear area. The area connects to parts of the body, such as the lower diaphragm, mouth, oesophagus, and other respiratory sites. Although science hasn’t proven the piercing to one hundred percent aid in the complete relief of migraines, many people say if you have a round ring in and spin it, the onset of a migraine significantly reduced or delayed.

Some pro tips:

Find a piercer that you can trust and that you feel comfortable with, and someone who is knowledgeable about acupressure points on the ears and your experience will be a lot better.

Have some sort ok idea of what your first piercing would be – have a look at ideas on Pinterest and Instagram and this way you will be able to build a beautiful curation – this will also depend on your ear shape as not all piercings look great on every ear.

Take the aftercare instructions seriously and follow them, this is an open wound and you are at the end of the day putting a foreign object in your ear.

Implant-grade titanium is the one most piercers recommend for initial piercings.

Please always pierce with a needle and the reason for this is a needle gives a cleaner piercing, more precision, shorter healing time, it hurts less and the type of jewellery you can choose is greater.

If you are interested in getting a beautiful ear curation for medical or aesthetic purposes I highly recommend (Actually the only place you should get Pierced) The Piercery or if you are wanting to skip the jewells you can opt for Auricular Therapy with Ear Seeds.

Don’t feel like committing to piercings? Try ear seeding
